Reproduction Rather than Comprehension? Analysis of Gains in Students’ Science Text Comprehension

Abstract The use of texts is an indispensable resource for students’ learning, especially in science domains. While developing understanding a specific topic usually the main goal reading expository texts, important consideration how to best measure whether this has been reached. In study, we aimed analyze gains comprehension based on three chemistry and physics topics. By means pre–post design, assessed 261 eighth grade students with regard levels comprehension. Latent change scores were estimated changes total test scores, while also calculating difference single items. Results indicate that topic-related increases from pre- posttest, seem be limited word sentence level questions. line other studies, these findings stress would benefit explicit strategy instruction, at least when learning using classrooms.
